Al's family settled in the Sandhills in 1888 and worked diligently to build a future on grassland that his grandfather, AT Davis, homesteaded north of Hyannis. After AT's death in 1915, Al's grandmother, Essie Davis, with an infant son, took the reins. She became one of Nebraska's more well-known and successful women.
